I really don't understand why there is so much anger toward this film. (I can understand anger toward the WTS) Maybe your expatations were too high. I think the director just meant for this to be a "sllice of life" type documentary not an expose'. He found a subject that he thought was interesting and decided to make a film about it. He picked the topics he wanted to discuss and stuck to those topics. He has that right, he's the filmmaker. The version on PBS was only 1 hour and you really can't cover much material in that amount of time, especially if it all is surrounded by controversy. Secondly this was on PBS's Indepednet Lens series. (How many people even watch that.) Everything I have seen on that series was junk. I thought this film typical for the series. I don't think that the film was particularly flattering towards the JWs but i feel that it was slanted in their favor. There should have been more critics and their choice of holocoust survivor was poor. He was a jew during the war so he was only an observer of JWs at the time. I just thought it was junk but nothing to get angry about.

Weird things relating to females at the KH
by Tatiana inwith all the news concerning the child abuse lawsuits, and from reading many comments concerning the wts' view of women, i started remembering lots of little things that were brought up at my kh in the many years i attended.
i don't remember anything pertaining to the brothers.
but, there were things brought up from the platform that just seem ridiculous.

Nothing pi$$ed me off more than some old man, with no sence of style telling me how to dress. If my skirt is inappropriate then let me wear pants, I told them. Of course that didn't go over very well.

Glaring contradiction between 1995 new light and Society's authority as FDS
by yaddayadda inin the 15 october 1995 watchtower the society brought out 'new light' that although christ sat down as king in 1914, but he did not sit down on his 'glorious throne' mentioned at matt 25: 31 in that year.
i cant understand why the society bothered to make this change in 1995?
this change was in some ways more damaging to them than the generation change, because the society essentially sawed off the branch they were sitting on by announcing this 1995 new light.

I vaguely remember a WT article about the difference between Jesus "arrival" and "presence". They went into detail about the huge difference that these two words in greek had and should be only understood the way that they were currently detailing. All that I could think was, they are the same word, they mean the same thing, I think they are just splitting hairs here. Their arguement made no sence to me. At that time I was a full believer. I am amazed at myself that I could beleive them and not believe them at the same time. Nonsence breeds nonsence, I suppose.

Atheists, Why the Anger?
by XJW4EVR inok, so you deny the existence of a god, or you lack belief in a god.
my question why do you get so angry over a mythical being?
no one gets as upset over the tooth fairy, santa claus or the easter bunny, as i have seen some of the atheists on this board get over the slightest mention of god.

From this thread I get the impression that some of you think that the majority of the wars and world's problems can be eliminated by ridding the world of reilgion. I disagree. People will always find a reason to fight or find ways to excuse evil actions. Religion is an easy outlet. Reilgion has inspired much good in the world, which isn't to say that only religious people are capable of good but most churches (not JWs) have charities and social outreach programs. I think that there must be some natural law that says that any thing which can be used for good, can be used for a equal or greater amount of evil. There are lots of examples.
I wish I could make myself believe in faries.

Commenting at Meetings: A Way Of Expressing Your Faith???
by R.F. inas we are told by the wt, commenting at the meetings is supposed to be a way of expressing your faith in the congregation.
i hardly felt this today during the wt study today or every meeting for that matter.
it seems more like this is the time when everyone wants to correct others or direct their comments in a way that it's condemnatory to others.

I always felt stupid commenting, so I rarely did. I thought it was rather embarassing. They would ask for heartfelt comments that stuck to the paragraph. The two never added up for me. What I did find rather nausiating (sp?) was at the book study when the six-year-old girl had her hand up for every question. Proving to me what a stupidly written book it was that we were studying as adults. Proving to everyone else what a super smart, super spirtiual little girl she is.

Athiests
by BR25 insorry if i that is the wrong spelling.
i just want to say that i used to be judgemental of athiests, but as a jw backer everyone on here finds nothing but wrong doing with the orginizations.
well i am sure i can find wrong doing with other churches and their teachings as well.

The thing I find annoying about athiests (the ones that I have met) is that they always want to argue with you. It gives me the creeps because they use the same kind of tricks as the Watchtower, referring to themselves as "people of reason" and seem to look down on people who don't share their views. I think it is a case of hating something so much that you become it. Athiests hate religion so much that it becomes thier religion. It almost seems like they doubt their lack of faith, worrying that maybe there is a god and your belief is a threat to their non-belief. I don't mean this to be an attack on all athiests, just the ones that I have met. Maybe I have just met athiests with very strong views and man, can they be pushy.

"They don't even know what they believe!" -- JW
by AlmostAtheist ina jw once said (more than once, probably) in regards to members of other faiths, "they don't even know what they believe!
" i know that's a legitimate quote from a real jw because i'm the one that said it.
i often found that the people i met in field service would claim to be a catholic or a methodist or whatever, but wouldn't have a clue about the beliefs of their church.

Yes Almost Athiest, I know exactly what you are saying. I have heard and said those same words with such arrogance, and feel the same shame today. Looking back, I find it funny how many JWs ask "What do we believe about...". Sad when a person can not decied for himself what he believes.

Did you make a new religion for yourself?
by White Dove ini'm associating with a church that i like very much, however, i find some things hard to digest, like jesus resurrecting himself.
i think the father did that, not him.
anyway, i am thinking that i can just keep associating for social reasons and some religious ones while reading the bible and having my own beliefs based on how i understand the bible and not blindly believe doctrine just because a big church teaches it.

I had an idea for a church, based on a basic christian church. For communion everyone gets a very small cupcake and a swig of cherry huggie drink. The person in charge gets to wear a pointy hat with their favorite cartoon character on it and we all sing that Spirt in the Sky song that they play on the oldies station. Thats all I have for now but I plan on developing this church idea further.
